    SDGs

    Description:

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism presents a blend of opportunities and challenges. This workshop interrogates journalism identity construction in the face of AI use in newsrooms, while contributing to the evolving discourse on AI's role in the media industry. Employing discourse theory and social identity theory as frameworks, this synthesizes insights from in-depth interviews with nine African journalists. The findings reveal a complex scenario: journalists recognize AI's efficiency in tasks like content distribution and fact-checking, yet express concerns over job security, ethical implications, and the preservation of cultural sensitivity in AI-generated content. Findings highlight AI's dual role, as an enhancer of journalistic practices and a potential disruptor of cultural norms. By offering insights into AI's impact in the African context, this research paves the way for future exploration in this critical, rapidly evolving field.
